Welcome to Granny Academy! I'm Sally McPheely, founder of Granny Academy, and I’m thrilled to share this journey with you as we prepare for the magical experience of becoming a grandparent. Our mission is to empower grandparents with the knowledge and tools they need to be successful caregivers, whether you live nearby or long distance. We cover everything from baby basics—like sleep, hygiene, and essential products—to building strong relationships with your grandchildren as they grow. We talk about setting healthy boundaries with new parents and managing expectations, ensuring everyone feels supported and respected. Financial guidance is also a key focus, helping you plan for your family’s legacy while managing your own finances. We discuss grandparent styling, emphasizing how to dress for both success and functionality, and we provide tips for maintaining your health and wellness as you care for your new grandbaby. Safety is paramount, so we offer resources for pediatric first aid and CPR training, baby-proofing tips, and advice on keeping children safe around pets. Beginnings of Granny Academy
When I was pregnant with my first child, I felt as prepared as any new parent could be. I had researched everything—baby products, sleep routines, feeding essentials—and was surrounded by countless resources, from books to blogs, helping me navigate this life-changing journey. My nursery was perfectly set up, every tiny outfit neatly arranged, and every must-have baby item in place. But no amount of preparation could fully prepare me for the overwhelming reality of bringing our son home.
Despite the chaos and exhaustion of those early weeks, I had support. My husband and I leaned on our research, each other, and the resources available to new parents. But it didn’t take long to realize that while I had guidance, our parents—our baby’s new grandparents—did not. They were eager to help, desperate to be involved, yet often unsure of their role. My in-laws, who lived just 30 minutes away, helped a lot—bringing meals, holding the baby, and stepping in when we asked. But there were moments of hesitation, uncertainty, and the unspoken question: How do we truly support without overstepping?
Then, my mom arrived from Australia. Overjoyed to finally meet her grandson, she soaked up every snuggle and every moment. But within days, she confided in me through tears that she felt lost—in the way, unsure of how to help, and struggling to find her place in this new dynamic.
It was in that moment I realized something crucial: there were no resources to support the support. No guide to help grandparents navigate this transition—how to offer help in a way that truly benefits new parents, how to build strong relationships with their grandchildren, and how to care for themselves so they can be present for years to come.
That’s why I created Granny Academy.
